Hope everyone had a wonderful New Year! Mike's party was a blast - they roasted 120 pounds of pig! It took four of them just a few minutes to cut it all up (lots of practice apparently!). Here's a picture of the pig on the spit:
It was insanely delicious! The party was a blast!
As you probably know, today is my birthday. It's been fantastic... it's 2:30pm and I'm still in my jammies! I've watched a bunch of episodes of "ER" (thanks Mike!) and some "Friends" reruns. It's been wonderfully relaxing!
The Mather air show is tomorrow and for the last two days, the Blue Angels (along with various other planes) have been practicing over my house. And when I say over my house, I mean... here's me standing in my back yard:
It's just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. I totally want to fly one. They were flying over work as well (tells you how close I live) and all day everyone basically stood outside or at the windows to see all the cool tricks they were doing. The biplanes were out as well as the F-16. I can't imagine that these pilots ever have a day where they say "I don't really like what I'm doing" or "I don't want to fly really cool planes today".
Shadow, on the other hand, hates them. Here is a series I call "Dog In Motion". Basically, him chasing planes all over my backyard:
Way too cool. I'm hoping to get lots of pictures and video tomorrow!
P.S. There's a turkey on my neighbors roof. I swear to god, he's stalking me!
Today a turkey tried to kill me.
No lie.
I came home for lunch and while it was cooking, I went to roll my trash cans down to the curb. As I was rolling my second can down, I happened to look across the street and saw a gigantic turkey on my neighbor's lawn. He opened his tail (think the kind of turkeys you saw when they taught you about the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving) and the first thing that goes through my head is "Oooh... pretty... I should go get my camera!". So I run into the house and come out the front door. I stand at the edge of my grass and start taking pictures when suddenly, Mr. Turkey decides to start ambling towards me. I thought "Oooh... better pictures!" and kept snapping away. When he hit the sidewalk I started to back up a little. At this point, he sort of sags his wings and the feathers start dragging on the ground. Keep in mind, until then he was making the pretty little turkey sounds (the ones that sound like the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park). I continue backing up because, let's face it, this thing is big.
This is where things went crazy.
Did you know that turkeys HISS? Yeah, that's right. Hiss. Like a cat. At this point, I realized that things were seriously wrong and I was about to have my eyeballs pecked out. I turned and ran for the house, at which point Psycho Turkey followed me (I slammed the door in his face). I had about another 20 minutes before I had to leave for work, so I ate my lunch and played with Shadow.
Before I left, I peeked back out the front window, because of course I parked my car in the driveway and if the turkey was there I wouldn't have been able to get to my car. I couldn't see him anymore, so I figured he had waddled on and I was safe.
Wrong.
As I rounded the corner, there he stood, in all his turkey glory, just waiting for me. I swear, he was ambushing me. I hit the panic button on my car and made a beeline for the door. God must have been watching over me because I made it without any turkey beak marks.
Here are some pictures of my attacker:
I swear to God, if I see that thing again, he's Thanksgiving dinner. There had to be a good 20 pounds of meat on him...
Today I was chased by a pair of wild turkeys. I was driving home from my allergy shots appointment, minding my own business, when I spotted two wild turkeys on the lawn a couple houses down from mine. They were sort of just standing there in the rain... on one foot, like a flamingo. I had no idea turkeys did this! So I and busted out my cell phone to take some pictures - it was sprinkling and I was amazed that they were just hanging out. I start snapping away and one of them moved towards my car. The first thing I say is "good turkey" (I have no idea where that came from... just roll with it). Apparently, in turkey talk, that's a bad thing because my two turkeys went from the cute "gobble gobble" sounds to what can only be described as velociraptor sounds. I'm not sure how many of you have seen "Jurassic Park", but basically, they make these weird little kid sounds that are otherworldly. As my dad put so nicely put it "that sound would scare the shit out of you if you were alone in the woods". That's pretty much how I felt about my scary turkey sound. I decided that it was time to stop taking pictures and move it
on down the line. I start to roll up my window as I ease my foot off the break and happened to catch a little bit of movement out of the corner of my eye. Lo and behold, the turkeys were following me, all while slowly moving closer to the car. I tested this theory by driving a little faster, and sure enough, those suckers kept up! Needless to say, I'm no longer worried about Shadow going after them when they show up in my front yard. I feel like they could kick my dog's ass. These were some bad ass turkeys!
In other really exciting news, Shadow and I had our final session of training tonight. We've been taking the basic class a second time around, not because he hasn't learned the moves, but more to get him around other dogs and more importantly, get him behaving around other dogs. I like the last night of class because we get
to play around on the agility equpitment, which Shadow
is a whiz at! He's one of the few dogs that loves going on the little see-saw. The cool thing about our trainers is that they allow you to come back to the beginning class as many times as you want to until the end of time. My plan was to keep going so that he gets the socialization. Well, tonight, Alan (the trainer), came up to me and said that he really thinks Shadow is ready for the intermediate class and that he needs to be challenged. His exact words were "He's getting bored in this class". I can't even tell you how proud I was! I know it's totally ridiculous, but I was so happy! This must be what having kids who bring home good report cards or whatever is like!
Anyways, besides being ridicuously proud, I'm also trying to fight off a cold. My new tactic (since my doctor told me I have "bad sinuses" - ouch!) is to load up on the decongestants. I figure if there's nothing in there, there's nothing to get infected! So far, so good. Just a scratchy throat and a little tiredness. We'll see how it goes as the week moves on!
